Overview of the Children’s House (Primary)

More and more people are becoming aware of the significance of the early years in a child’s life for physical and intellectual development and for the formation of the child’s attitude toward him/herself and the world. Coupled with this is a concern that this growth take place in an atmosphere where the child’s physical and emotional security is safeguarded, and where self-esteem and natural curiosity are appreciated and nurtured. Many of these people are turning to Montessori as perhaps the most established and internationally recognized program for supporting the self-development of their children during these early years.

We at the Montessori School of Beaverton are proud to be a part of this movement in education. Preschool in the Children’s House is a 3-year program for children 3-6 years of age. Join us in the adventure of understanding and assisting these children who hold so much promise.

Children's House (Primary) Application Process

The first step in the application process is the Parent Observation, an opportunity for a prospective parent to actually sit in on the classes, to see first hand how the Montessori method is implemented at the Montessori School of Beaverton. These observations are by appointment only and appointments are very limited. In order to establish a priority list for those appointments, we will hold a lottery on October 23, 2010 for the 2011/12 school year waiting lists. If your child will be at least 3 years old by October 31, 2011, and his/her birth date falls between September 1, 2007 and October 31, 2008, you are eligible.

To enter your name in the lottery, fill out the Lottery Form and return to the school. Only forms received on or before 9/30/10 can be included in the drawing. Only one form per child will be accepted.

A letter with results of the lottery will be sent to every family that participated during the first two weeks of October. Families that make it onto the list for observations will also be called during the month of October to schedule an observation. These appointments will occur between mid-October and late January.

Overview of the Elementary Program

The Elementary Program at the Montessori School of Beaverton is for students 6-12 years of age. It is organized into two 3-year programs, the lower elementary and the upper elementary.

Like you, we feel that the elementary years are critically important not only for the acquisition of knowledge and skills that will stay with these children for a lifetime, but also for the development of their attitudes toward learning, toward themselves and toward others. Our mixed age groups allow each child to find his/her own level and peers within the group, and experience being both a follower and a leader. We place a strong emphasis on learning to cooperate, and to respect other's rights and feelings just as one’s own rights and feelings are respected.

The curriculum is both open-ended and highly integrated, allowing deeper exploration than a ‘unit’ approach. Children experience the fact that skills, knowledge and learning disciplines do not exist in a vacuum, but draw upon each other. The individualized nature of the program allows each child the flexibility to pursue interests and progress at his or her own rate without being held back by either an artificial limit to their exploration or by the lowest common denominator in their group. In this way children grow in their ability to set goals and evaluate their own work.

It is an exciting and ambitious program that has been developed, implemented and improved over a period of many decades. The Curriculum section offers our response to the needs, challenges and potentials of this important age. As you look it over, you will see that the Montessori program is very special.

Elementary Application Process

Openings are very limited and enrollment preference is given to children coming up through our own programs, to siblings of current students, and to children who we determine would make the smoothest transition to the program and be the best served. Usually this means a strong Montessori background in the preschool and kindergarten years.

There is no lottery for admission for elementary students. Prospective parents are invited to call the school to schedule a time to observe the classes and meet with an administrator.
